About Diabetes
- Diabetes is a chronic disease in which the body does not produce or does not properly use insulin. It is one of the most complex of all chronic medical disorders and requires extensive self-management from patients.
- In the U.S. diabetes affects 18.2 million people, or 6.3% of the population, and is the fifth deadliest disease.
- Type 1 diabetes, usually diagnosed in children and adolescents, is the more severe form of the disease in which the body fails to produce insulin. Insulin must be administered to sustain life.
